A Need – “Free therapy”

On meeting someone, or sending over a wish to someone, we intend to make a quote of “Keep smiling”. Knowing it’s a cliche, as that person can’t be smiling all through, yet we make that quote, with a hope that let their smile lift them in their drifts. Today I would suggest to make a change in this statement from “Keep smiling” to “Keep laughing”, may sound weird, but in the end, you may get on with this statement.

Keywords: Therapy,laughter,laugh therapy,healthy life.

Laughter was not considered as an aid with therapeutic benefits, until 1979 When Norman Cousin in one of his book titled “Anatomy of an illness” stated that ” Laughter as creating an analgesic effect for pain caused by ankylosing spondylitis”. From then, laughter was not just considered as an expression or an emotion, it had become a talk point and a need to be researched content.

A WELLNESS TOOL

Laughter is considered to have an impact-physiologically, psychological, and socially. As the WHO states the definition of health as, “A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being”. From this, it is clearly evidential that, laughter is a way to well-being and can be stated as a wellness tool.

A way to eliminate illness is wellness

HEALTH ASPECTS OF LAUGHTER:

1. Act on stress hormones:

A study done with 10 subjects showed that, after an hour of watching a comedy video, showed a significant reduction in the stress hormone level that is cortisol level. Cortisol hormone is an essential one for our body, but a higher level for a prolonged period may lead to hyperglycemia, hypertension, lowered body immunity, increased inflammatory response in the body. Thus laughter helps in combatting the negative effect caused by cortisol in a prolonged stress condition.

2. Releases the endorphins:

Laughing increases the production of endorphins, a feel-good brain chemicals. It gives a feeling of wellbeing, creating a positivity in ourself and in our surroundings ultimately. Researches also indicate that endorphins alleviate pain.

3. Boosting the immune system:

A larger study done with 52 subjects revealed that after an hour of screening a comedy video there was an increase in the level of natural killer cells, IgG, IgM and other leukocytes. All these cells attribute to the immune response, thus end up by boosting up our immune system.

4. Increases the pain tolerance:

In a research, when the subjects were exposed to a cold pressor stimulus after a humorous picture, they showed a significant tolerance to the pain stimulus.

5. Act on bloodpressure:

In a Research, vasodilation was absorbed after watching an hour of comedy drama. The vasodilation, in turn, reduces the blood pressure. Hence laughter could help out in maintaining a normotensive blood pressure level.

6. In geriatric healthcare:

Laughter has a profound effect in geriatric healthcare, it enhances the circulation providing a healthy heart, relieves stress, reduced the hypertensive blood pressure, enhances the memory power.

Especially laughter therapy is added on as a medication in dementia condition, where it is found to be efficient in reducing the agitation by 20%, which is equivalent to an antipsychotic drug prescribed.

A day without laughter is a day wasted

Laugher is to be inbuilt in our life, either in a spontaneous manner or as a stimulated one(laughter yoga). Today in a goal accomplishment and target-based lifestyle, there are more and more enough external stimuli to induce stress. In this time period, there is a need for this exclusive free therapy, that just cost your time and your wholeheartedness towards it. We take time to get stress over things that happen in our life, and end up with negative impact on our health, then why don’t we make time to enjoy the things that are present around us, and laugh out.

To end up, LIVE, LAUGH, LOVE.😇💙
